Gwalior, India for Condé Nast Traveller
My first time in India was September 2024 for Condé Nast Traveller. I travelled with writer and historian Sam Dalrymple to Gwalior for a story about Gwalior, a city in central India’s Madhya Pradesh region.
Gwalior is a lesser known and rarely visited city but is considered the birthplace of modern Indian music. We were treated to live music and dance in carved stone temples and cocktails with the princess on the palace roof. It was a wonderful (if extremely hot) first experience of india.
One surprise highlight amongst the luxury and beauty of palaces and temples was a place we visited called Gwalior Sickness Centre. I must admit, when I saw it on the itinerary I thought it might be some kind of leper colony-turned art centre or museum, but as it turned out it was a skate park and music venue for Gwalior’s younger music scene.
